Not Forgetting Our Wonderful Rescues
Every August, we celebrate National Dog Day, a time to honour our loyal companions and shine a light on the thousands of dogs still waiting for a loving home. It’s a day to celebrate the joy dogs bring into our lives and to highlight the importance of adoption and rescue.
Last year, Dogs Trust reported over 30,000 stray dogs handled by UK local authorities. Rescue centres are overwhelmed—many at breaking point—due to the cost-of-living crisis and post-pandemic surrenders. Tragically, even healthy dogs may be euthanised if shelters are full and no foster homes are available.
Across the UK, countless animal rescue organisations—large and small—work tirelessly to give these animals a second chance. One such organisation is Ark Angels Animal Rescue in North Wales. A volunteer from Justice for Reggie recently attended their fundraising day, where Ark Angels volunteers were busy selling their home made delicious Biscoff cheesecakes, running a tombola stall, and offering beautiful flowers grown in their own allotment. The turnout was fantastic, with generous donations from the public. They are also holding a Duck Race and Fun Day in the valley of Ffrith – a tranquil wooded area in Flintshire in September. More details are on their FB page.
Why is Ark Angels different?
They don’t use kennels—all animals are placed in foster homes, offering a nurturing, home-like environment.
They rescue not just dogs, but cats and horses too.
They address medical and behavioural needs, preparing animals for adoption.
They educate the public on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
They rely entirely on donations and public support.
Many rescued animals have faced trauma—passed from home to home, exploited for breeding, or sold through online platforms by puppy farmers or dodgy breeders. Some arrive with trust or behavioural issues, but fosterers receive full training to help them thrive before going on to their forever homes.
We already know the benefits of dog ownership—improved mood, reduced anxiety, and less loneliness. Even brief interactions with dogs release oxytocin, the “magic” hormone that relieves stress and pain.
It’s heart-breaking to see dogs and puppies listed for resale online, often bought on impulse by owners who aren’t prepared. Some are even auctioned off via WhatsApp to the highest bidder—an unimaginable fate awaits them.
How can you help?
Donate – every little helps.
Volunteer – support with animal care, admin, or fundraising. Even taking them for a walk makes all the difference.
Adopt or foster – give a rescue animal a loving home, or consider fostering.
Spread the word – be an advocate for animal welfare, or even just share on social media.
We have featured Hope Rescue and Almost Home dog rescue in our past blogs and of course, we would love to meet them all in time and give them support too. We hugely appreciate the important work they do and the dedication they show.
Ark Angels—and their famous Biscoff cheesecake certainly pack a punch with passion and love.
Please consider adopting a rescue if you can.
