As we approach Christmas, a time when demand for pets traditionally increases, it is more important than ever for prospective owners to do their research before bringing an animal into their home.
Studies have shown that many people spend less time researching where a pet comes from than they should, while others fail to fully consider the long-term costs and responsibilities of pet ownership. This creates opportunities for irresponsible breeders to continue profiting at the expense of animal welfare.
This month alone, we have seen heartbreaking reports from animal rescue organisations dealing with the consequences of puppy farming and backyard breeding. In Ireland, rescue teams have removed dogs and puppies from appalling conditions, including animals kept in near darkness and breeding dogs found pregnant and neglected. Here in the UK, the RSPCA has also highlighted concerns about ongoing cruelty cases involving illegal and irresponsible breeding operations.
Many rescued dogs are found severely underweight, frightened and suffering from untreated health conditions. By the time authorities intervene, the puppies have often already been sold. It raises an important question: would those buyers have purchased a puppy if they had seen the conditions the parent dogs were living in?
Unfortunately, prosecutions often result in relatively small fines or temporary bans on keeping animals. While these penalties are important, many campaigners believe stronger enforcement and tougher deterrents are needed to prevent repeat offences.
Public awareness is also key. Too many buyers are still falling victim to breeders who carefully disguise the reality behind the sale. Puppies may be advertised as being raised in loving family homes when they are not. Some sellers arrange to meet at unrelated addresses or make excuses as to why the mother dog cannot be seen.
If you are considering buying a puppy, always insist on seeing the mother interacting with the litter. Visit more than once if possible. Ask questions about health testing, vaccination records and how the puppies have been raised. A reputable breeder will welcome your interest and be happy to provide information.
Behind every puppy is a mother dog whose welfare matters too. By taking the time to research and recognise the warning signs, buyers can help reduce demand for irresponsible breeding and play a part in protecting countless animals from suffering.
Justice for Reggie continues to call for stronger action against puppy farming and backyard breeding, and for greater public education to help stop this cycle of cruelty.
